Steroids have many effects on the human body. For instance, corticosteroids suppress inflammation, anabolics contribute to muscle mass growth. Read on to find out what effects do anabolic steroids have on the body.
Beneficial Effects of Anabolic Steroids
Anabolics are artificial derivatives of testosterone. The physiological increase in testosterone content stimulates protein synthesis, which leads to an improvement in muscle volumes, bodyweight & strength. Moreover, testosterone and its derivatives are responsible for the occurrence and maturation of men’s secondary sexual characteristics (for example, hair growth on the body, gruff voice, male-pattern hair loss, sex drive, spermatozoa production, and aggressiveness). Individuals with testosterone deficiency take AAS for medical reasons, while athletes use these pharmaceuticals to improve muscle growth, increase productivity and accelerate fat burning. AAS also used in medicine to treat HIV-associated weight loss. For instance, Carl Grunfeld, Donald P. Kotler, Adrian Dobs et al. (University of California-San Francisco, 2006) reported that oxandrolone is efficient in promoting dose-dependent gains in body weight and body cell mass (BCM) in male persons with the human immunodeficiency virus.
To maximize the benefits of anabolic steroids in sports, it is recommended to take T-boosters. These are herb-based supplements for raising testosterone naturally. It is also desirable to take protein, multivitamins and fish oil, which contains eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids, precursors of eicosanoids having an anti-inflammatory effect. Consume chondroitin and glucosamine (like Jointace, Osteo Bi-Flex, and Zo Rub products) to protect joints. If your joints are already aching, heal them before cycling, as during the cycle titanic loads worsen the situation.
Side Effects of Anabolic Steroids
Suppression of natural hormones is the most common and probable side effect of “juice”. Almost always, the intake of hormonal medications will signal the endocrine system to reduce or stop the production of hormones. Steroids can wreak havoc with lipid and cholesterol levels. In addition, these drugs can adversely affect the liver. Cyclists may also feel increased aggression. Jay R. Hoffman and Nicholas A. Ratamess at the College of New Jersey, Ewing (2006) described the following medical issues associated with AAS usage (see Table 1 below):
- cardiovascular complications;
- myocardial infarct;
- felo-de-se (suicide);
- untimely epiphyseal plate closure;
- mania (elevations in manic scores);
- invertible azoospermia (no sperm in the ejaculate), oligospermia (deficiency of sperm cells), etc.

Side effects of steroids are minutely disclosed in this article.
Features of Some Anabolic Steroids
Nandrolone decanoate (Deca Durabolin) is a widely used anabolic substance. It features progestogenic activity, which can lead to gynecomastia. It is worth highlighting another nuance: the drug can lead to impotence (especially in elderly men). Therefore, Deca Durabolin is often combined with testosterone. The dosage of testosterone should be higher, and its intake should be a couple of weeks longer. This hormone can exclude the occurrence of such a side effect.
Testosterone propionate. This is a “short” test formulation. The “spire” of its action is only 24-48 hours. Thence, the medicine has to be administered every second day (or better even every day to ensure the smoothest background of the substance). This option as an introductive steroid cycle is more suitable for elderly athletes, who have low endogenous testosterone.
Oxandrolone (Anavar). It is the softest oral anabolic. It practically lacks side effects – there is no aromatization and liver toxicity. It also minimally affects the body’s own T levels. Its conventional dosage is 20mg/day, however big quantities may remarkably lessen bodily testosterone. One should not expect a great effect of the drug. It is suitable only for beginners, for whom this action will be sufficient.
Primobolan. This stuff is similar to oxandrolone. It does not aromatize. It slightly suppresses “native” testosterone. Its toxic effect on the liver is extremely low. Therefore, it is often used by beginners.
Methandrostenolone. This is an oral steroid. It also aromatizes, is toxic for the liver, strongly suppresses the production of natural testosterone, and sometimes it affects the digestive tract. Some athletes include Proviron in the “methane” cycle, as it blocks estrogen receptors and is an androgen.
Winstrol (Stanozol, abbrev. Stz). This drug is usually used at the cycle’s completion. In 1970-1980s, it was almost ubiquitous in competitive sports and muscle building. “Winny” increases vascularization and helps quickly burn the upper layer of fat.
When packing on pounds, athletes commonly use long aromatizable esters of anabolic steroids, e.g., testosterone enanthate (or other “long” testosterone). If your goal is cutting, adapt your cycle by removing long ethers of anabolics. The thing is that the cutting phase traditionally requires either non-aromatizable drugs (for example, Winstrol or Trenbolone) or very short testosterone esters (in fact, the only propionate can be included in this group). This allows one to achieve lean muscles, avoiding a “watery” quality. It is usually enough to obviate a “long steroid” for some time before the competition, to turn the cycle into a cutting one.
Steroid doping requires post-cycle therapy (PCT). With the use of steroids and the appearance of side effects, it is imperative to take drugs that minimize adverse events. Another goal of PCT is the restoration of endogenous levels of hormones.
Steroids’ Effects: the Bottom Line
All anabolic steroids have similar principles of action, but certain drugs can affect the body in different ways. For example, testosterone is used at the beginning of a steroid cycle to boost metabolism and gain good muscle mass. Such drugs as Winstrol are used in the final stage to provide vascularization and burn the excess fat that hides the muscle definition.
