“Steroids” term includes not only anabolic injections (such as Testoviron depot), anabolic pills, and testosterone gel. There are also a lot of steroid inhaler brands on the market. They are used for asthma and some other conditions (not for muscle mass gaining). Usually, they are RX drugs (not OTC steroids). Inhalers may be brown & blue. Brown ones are intended for managing symptoms of asthma. Blue ones are fast-acting rescue remedies. In this article, we’ll tell you about top inhaled steroids.

Steroid inhaler names – budesonide

Budesonide is a known medicament among steroid inhaler names. It positively affects the condition of bronchi. Through relaxation of the smooth muscles of the bronchi it provides expanding of airways. The medicament is applied for bronchitis of asthma nature, bronchial asthma, as well as for different types of rhinitis.

Hypersensitivity to the main and auxiliary components of the medicament is the contraindication to its administering. Budesonide is not prescribed for children under 6 years of age.

Children aged 4-11 years should be prescribed 0.05 mg per nasal cavity once a day. The maximal daily dose is 0.1 milligram in each nasal cavity. Ointments and creams are applied as thin layer on the affected skin 1-2 times per day. The duration of treatment is 14 days.

Inhaled steroids list – mometasone furoate

Mometasone furoate has antipruritic, anti-exudative and vasoconstrictive effect. This drug treats dermatoses (inflammatory and itching), chronic eczema, atopic and seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis with manifestations of hyperkeratosis in adults and children after 3 years of age. Contraindications for using this drug include excessive sensitivity to any of its components.

What is a beclomethasone? It is a glucocorticoid medicament for adult persons & children after 6 years. It helps patients to fight against asthma, edema, inflammatory processes, and allergy. The medicament is available in spray form for dosed inhalation through the nose, and also in the form of a powder for making inhalations.

Acute spasm of bronchial tubes, severe asthma attacks, bronchitis of non-asthmatic nature are contraindications to using the medicament. Symbicort Turbuhaler is a medicament belonging to both corticosteroids & β2-adrenergic stimulators. It may be used treat asthmatic patients. There are 2 main agents of the drug: budesonide & formoterol. Glucocorticosteroid budesonide has a rapid anti-inflammatory action on the respiratory system. Formoterol is a selective stimulator of β2-adrenergic receptors, causes relaxation of muscles of the bronchi in patients with reversible obstruction of the airway lumen.

All forms of the medicament are contraindicated for children under the age of 6 years, but some forms aren’t intended for children under 12 years. The medicament is not prescribed in case of hypersensitivity to its components. Adult persons & children after 12 prescribed up to two inhalations twice a day. Use of the medicament once per day can be individually effective.

Steroid inhaler brands – Seretide Diskus

Seretide Diskus is known the name in the inhaled steroids list. It is an anti-asthmatic medicament containing salmeterol and fluticasone. Salmeterol as a selective beta2-adrenomimetic long-acting prevents the development of bronchospasm. The glucocorticosteroid drug fluticasone has an anti-inflammatory action. Hypersensitivity to salmeterol and fluticasone is the basis for contraindications to this medicament.

In case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the dose depends on the severity of this ailment, the minimum effective dose should be chosen. Adults may use a double dose of any form of the drug. This option of taking the medicament is usually safe to use as the usual dosage of the Seretide Diskus. Children from 4 years are prescribed one inhalation 2 times per day.

Steroid inhaler side effects – the comprehensive list

Budesonide steroid inhaler side effects include:

  • fungal infection, pharynx inflammation, hoarseness and coughing;
  • a headache, tremor, agitation, dizziness, sleep disorders, anxiety, muscle cramps, intermittent heartbeat;
  • hives, exanthema, spasm of bronchi, itch;
  • behavior disorders, dispiritedness;
  • suppression of adrenal function, reduction of bone mineral density, growth retardation in children;
  • enlarged intraocular pressure, cataract.

Fluticasone can cause dryness & irritation of the mucous surface of the nasopharynx, burning, and nosebleeds. Ointment and cream can cause allergic contact dermatitis, local allergic reactions. Similar side effects may be caused by mometasone furoate.

Adverse effects of beclomethasone in the form of inhalations include fungal infections of the oral cavity, coughing, perspiration and hoarseness in the throat, allergic reactions. Spray form of the medical remedy can cause dryness & irritation of the mucous membranes, fungal infections, nosebleeds. Long-term use of beclomethasone can cause systemic adverse events.

Adverse effects of Symbicort include slight irritation in the throat, candidiasis of the mucous membranes of the mouth and pharynx, hoarseness, cough, bronchospasm, atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, irregular heartbeat, angina, blood pressure fluctuations, etc. The use of Seretide Diskus can cause the development of paradoxical bronchospasm with an immediate increase in dyspnea after inhalation, which requires immediate application of bronchodilators of fast and short action.
